Jeddah Jeddah hyperbolically known as the Paris of Arabia. It’s also the gateway to the holy cities of Makkah and Madinah. Although Riyadh is the capital of the kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Jeddah is known as its commercial capital. Since Jeddah is situated at the Red Sea coast, it is also known as Bride of Red Sea. ‘Jeddah’ as pronounced by its people, means prosperity and happiness. It is also pronounced as ‘Jadda’ meaning grandmother referring to mother Eve. This is in accordance to legend that she landed here and is buried in the graveyard just outside the old city. Another pronunciation is ‘Joddah’ and this means a narrow passage between two mountains or a long road.
Transportation Facilities are available in the kingdom either by air where daily flights serve all the main cities or by land through a number of airs conditioned buses. Inside Jeddah the easiest most of transportation is the taxi services that are reasonably priced and highly available. Climate Jeddah, on the shores of the Red Sea, has a hot and humid climate year-round. Summer is hot with temperature in some areas reaching 32c. Winter is cooler with an average temperature of 23c in Jeddah. Places to Visit Jeddah has some great museums including the Municipality museum located in a 200-year-old restored traditional house built from Red Sea coral. The museum has interesting photos of the development of Jeddah along the rooms done up in traditional style. Another museum called Abdul Raouf Hasan Khalil, which is one of the famous museums in Jeddah.
If you seek the visually spectacular, Jeddah will never disappoint you. And there is probably nowhere most spectacular than Jeddah’s Corniche in the evening, where you can see the second biggest fountain in the world; it can reach a height of 161 meters.
